When Re still ruled the earth and he was smart and powerful Re had a premonition. A premonition that told him if Nut (goddess of the sky who is married to Geb) had children one of the children would end his rein over the earth. Re cursed Nut, a curse that made it impossible for her to have children for all 360 days of the year.
Upset and depressed Nut went to Thoth (God of magic and wisdom) for help. Thoth Knew the Curse could never be changed or reversed. But, Thoth knew a way around the curse. So, he went to Khonsu (God of the moon) and challenged him to a contest. Thoth won every time. With each loss Khonsu grew more and more desperate to win. With the stakes raising Khonsu bet some of his light and lost. Thoth grabbed up the betted light and went to Nut. With the light Thoth made five extra days. Since these days weren’t part of a year Re’s cures didn’t affect the new days.
On the first day, Nut gave birth to Osirus. The next day was saved for the birth of Horus (son of Isis and Osirus). The third day an evil and dark god called Set was born. The fourth day Her daughter Isis was birthed. Then on the final day Nut gave birth to Nephthys.
Osirus was Re’s successor. Isis married Osirus and they brought many great things to Egypt. They showed people how to farm. He stopped cannibalism. Osirus left Egypt to spread the knowledge and joy all over the world. While he was gone he left Isis in charge.
When Osirus returned Egypt was in harmony. His Brother Set's hatred for Osirus grew so much he plotted to kill Osirus.
Set threw a party in honor of Osirus’s return. At the end of the party Seth brought out a beautiful chest made of gold and wood. The inside was in the shape of a body. Set said whoever fit in the chest best would get it. After many gods trying to fit into the chest. Osirus tried and it fit perfectly. Set locked him in the chest and threw it into the Nile. The Nile carried out to the sea where many miles away it beached and a gigantic tamarisk tree grew around it.
The tree grew to be an amazing height. The king of the land (the tree was not in Egypt) ordered the tree to be cut down and used as a great pillar in his palace.
In Egypt Isis took her baby Horus to an island where Buto lived. She asked Buto to watch over her baby while she looked for Osirus.
By this time Osirus’s human body had died.
Isis had to give Osirus a proper burial for him to travel to the afterlife. After many years of searching Isis heard stories of the great tree and went to the kings palace. In disguise Isis began working for the Queen by watching her children. Isis wanted to make one of the queen’s sons immortal. During the ritual the Queen came in and thought her baby was being harmed. Isis ceased the ritual and took her true form.
Isis told the Queen and King about her quest. They peacefully allowed her to take Osirus’s coffin while leaving the pillar where it is. She took the chest back to Egypt and hid it in the marshlands and ran to get her son. Unfortunately one night While Set was hunting he stumbled across the coffin.
Infuriated by this, he opened the chest and cut Osirus’s boy into 14 pieces and scattered them across the Nile. Isis began searching again with assistance. Nephthys left Set to help Isis and her son Anubis came too.
Slowly they found the pieces. When she found a single piece her priests would perform a proper burial. Using her magic she would make a body that looked like Osirus. Only 13 parts were found because some fish ate the 14th. So across Egypt there are 13 shrines for Osirus. Isis never buried any of the body parts found. Then when she put the pieces together Osirus’s spirit carried on into the afterlife to rule over the dead.
Osirus’s spirit visited Horus to train him many times. When Horus was ready Osirus ordered him to declare war on Set. Horus gathered a great army and attacked Set.
It was a known fact that whoever looked into Horus’s eyes would see the future. Re came to look into his eyes. But while Re was looking Set turned in to a huge boar and charged at Horus. Set pierced the eyes of Horus and disappeared. After Horus’s eyes had healed the war began.
After many battles the final battle came. It took place in Edfu. As the two sides approached each other Set took the form of a giant Hippopotamus. Set sent a giant flood toward Horus and Isis. Set rode the biggest wave of all toward Horus. With Set hurtling toward him Horus took the shape of a 12 ft. tall young man with a harpoon. .
Set was about to kill Horus, when Horus threw the harpoon and defeated the evil god. The flood ceased and Set only existed as a spirit.
When it was time for Horus to be judged not even Toth could judge. And to this day Horus’s and Set’s spirit still roam the earth competing for peoples souls. One day Horus and Set will battle a final battle and Horus will win. Then Osirus will rise from the dead and bring back the lives of all his followers. And that is why the Egyptians embalm the dead.
